Probabilistic population and household forecasts for the Netherlands

چکیده
Population forecasters have a long tradition of explicitly stating the uncertainty of their forecasts by means of specifying alternative variants. In addition to a medium variant, usually high and low variants are published. One problem in using high and low variants is that it is unknown how likely it is that the interval between these variants will cover the actual population size. Probabilistic population forecasts provide information about the probability that a specific forecast interval will cover the true future value. The development of high speed computers has made it possible to make probabilistic forecasts by means of simulations. The probability distribution of future population is assessed on the basis of assumptions about the degree of uncertainty of future fertility, mortality, and migration. In assessing the uncertainty of household forecasts one major question is how low and high variants should be specified. It is not evident whether one should combine the high population variant with high or low average household size. Since the high population variant is based on high fertility, it seems logical to combine the high population variant with large household size and similarly the low population variant with small family size. However, this would imply that the difference between the numbers of households in the low and high variants would be rather small, which may lead to underestimating the degree of uncertainty of household forecasts. On the other hand combining high population growth with low household size may lead to overestimating uncertainty. One benefit of making probabilistic

Probabilistic household forecasts based on register data - the case of Denmark and Finland
BACKGROUND Household forecasts are important for public planning and for predicting consumer demand. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this paper is to compute probabilistic household forecasts for Finland and Denmark, taking advantage of unique housing register data covering the whole populations dating back to the 1980s. A major advantage is that we do not have to rely on small population samples, and...
متن کاملEnvironmental prediction, risk assessment and extreme events: adaptation strategies for the developing world
The uncertainty associated with predicting extreme weather events has serious implications for the developing world, owing to the greater societal vulnerability to such events. Continual exposure to unanticipated extreme events is a contributing factor for the descent into perpetual and structural rural poverty. We provide two examples of how probabilistic environmental prediction of extreme we...
متن کاملThe impact of forecasting methodology on the accuracy of national population forecasts: evidence from the Netherlands and Czechoslovakia.
"This study considers the accuracy of national population forecasts of the Netherlands and the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic.... We look at the demographic components employed in each forecast, the procedure to extrapolate fertility and the level at which assumptions for each component are formulated. Errors in total population size, fertility, mortality and foreign migration, and age struct...
متن کاملSustainability of Long-term Care: Puzzling Tasks Ahead for Policy-Makers
Background The sustainability of long-term care (LTC) is a prominent policy priority in many Western countries. LTC is one of the most pressing fiscal issues for the growing population of elderly people in the European Union (EU) Member States. Country recommendations regarding LTC are prominent under the EU’s European Semester. Methods This paper examines challenges related to the financial-...
متن کاملDemography and Sociology Program Research School of Social Sciences Stochastic Population Forecasts Using Functional Data Models for Mortality, Fertility and Migration
Age-sex-specific population forecasts are derived through stochastic population renewal using forecasts of mortality, fertility and net migration. Functional data models with time series coefficients are used to model age-specific mortality and fertility rates. As detailed migration data are lacking, net migration by age and sex is estimated as the difference between historic annual population ...
